Maslow’s Hierarchy of Needs
Maslow’s Hierarchy of Needs is a psychological theory that explains human motivation through a progression of needs, usually visualized as a pyramid but better represented as a spiral to reflect its fluidity. Basic needs, such as food, water, and safety, must be somewhat be met before individuals can pursue higher levels like belonging, esteem, and ultimately, self-actualization—reaching one’s full potential through personal growth and creativity. In an art classroom, this understanding can guide teachers to create an environment where students feel safe and supported, addressing their basic and emotional needs so that they can engage in expression and personal development. Teachers can create moments of self-actualization and peak experiences, even if some foundational needs are unmet.
